NBC announced at the Saturday’s Television Critics Association tour that Diane Lane will play Hillary Clinton in a new miniseries. The four-hour miniseries, written and directed by Courtney Hunt [Frozen River], doesn’t have an air date yet. Nor does it have a leading man to play former President, Bill Clinton.
The story will begin in 1998, during the scandal of President Clinton’s extramarital liaison with intern Monica Lewinsky.
This is not the first time the former First Lady and Secretary of State has been portrayed in Hollywood. Other actresses that have stepped into her shoes include Hope Davis, in the 2010 HBO movie The Special Relationship, and Emma Thompson who, even though it wasn’t exactly Hillary, played a long-suffering politician’s wife [most likely based on Hillary] in 1998’s Primary Colors.
Depending on when it airs, political opponents of Clinton’s might accuse NBC of running a de facto campaign ad for her, as she is still mulling over a 2016 presidential bid of her own. NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said: “She’s not going to probably declare for another 2 years, so this could well have aired before that”. Obviously nothing to worry about there.
