The first full trailer for Disney Pixar’s Soul has officially been released. Following Onward, Soul, directed by Pete Docter, is the second of two original Pixar movies to be released in 2020. This is also the first Pixar movie with a black lead. In this movie, Joe Gardner, voiced by Jamie Foxx, a middle school band teacher has just landed his dream job playing a gig at a jazz club. However, on his way home, he falls into an open manhole. 

The open manhole leads Joe to The Great Before, a place where new souls get their personalities, interests, and quirks before going to Earth. In The Great Before, Joe meets 22, voiced by Tina Fey. 22 doesn’t want to go to Earth so Joe has to convince her that she is missing out on the joys and excitement of life, like pizza for example. Joe realizes he misses his life and tries to get his soul back to his body on Earth. 

Upon the first watch, it seems like a combination of Inside Out and Coco. It’s about a musician following his dreams like in Coco but then the main character exists as a soul like the emotions in Inside Out. The animated souls also look like minimalist versions of the animated emotions in Inside Out. Even in the trailer, the animation looks gorgeous. 

In just two-and-a-half-minutes, Soul is already asking some pretty big, existential questions. Is all this living really worth dying for? Have you ever wondered what makes you, you? It all seems very deep for a supposed children’s movie. However, Coco made $807.1 million and Inside Out made $857.6 million so its prospects are good (assuming movie theatres are open in June).

The voice cast of the movie includes Jamie Foxx as Joe Gardner, Tina Fey as 22, Questlove as Curly, Phylicia Rashad as Joe’s mother, Daveed Diggs as Paul, and Angela Bassett as Dorothea Williams. 

Soul is currently scheduled for release on June 19, 2020.
