Paul McGann (the 8th Doctor) hasn’t given up on getting a role in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special yet! That's what he said, amongst many other exciting things, in an interview with ZBTV. Not only did he suggest that any of our favourite characters might make a comeback in the upcoming anniversary special, but he also called Whovians “brilliant people.” Thank you Paul, we love you too!
In the interview, he explained that he finds it odd to be at all those Doctor Who conventions: “It was only a six week gig,” he said, “and yet I’m here with these guys who were with Doctor Who for years.” He went on to add that he has had problems with internet trolls, saying “certain characters and trolls and the like sometimes say to me “you’re a waste of a regeneration!”” Well, just let them talk Paul, because it might only have been 6 weeks, but quality beats quantity!
When the interview turned to the subject of the 50th anniversary, Paul spoke about Christopher Eccleston’s decision not to join the cast: “I think Chris Eccleston is probably a big factor in [the anniversary special]. I don’t want to speak for him… he’s probably reluctant to get involved in anything that’s ongoing.” He then went on to say that “that’s something that they have to somehow get over and deal with. I’m guessing they’ve got time to do it.”
Although many Whovians might still have hope that Doctor Who's management just want to keep Christopher's involvement a surprise, perhaps Paul does have a point: if Christopher truly decided to decline the role, it would leave some room to be filled… and that means that replacements will be needed.
So which characters do you think might make an unexpected return? Could we even see Paul McGann’s 8th Doctor return to the screen? Let us know!
