Don Cheadle has ventured into the world of crowd-funding to finance a biopic for the renowned avant-garde Jazz musician Miles Davis.
Miles Ahead is a passion project for the highly-acclaimed actor. Cheadle co-wrote the script, and in addition to starring as Davis, he will also make his directorial debut with the film.
Cheadle is using IndieGogo to fund the picture’s production, which will be a different spin on the biopic genre. Miles Ahead will concentrate on one short but important period in the late performer’s life where he struggled with the artistic and personal challenges of returning to music after drug addiction had forced him to quit the business.
Cheadle says the movie “is not just about the music. It’s about what we all face at one time or another in our lives; questions about who we really are, what we have to say and how will we say it. How will we ultimately be defined and who gets to say so?”
The project is fully supported by Davis’ son and nephew, who actually named Cheadle as their dream choice to play Davis all the way back in 2006 after the legend was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
