I know all of you Downton Abbey fans have been going completely insane without some kind of scoop about the hit ITV series, but the wait is now over! The fans are still not over the death of Matthew, but this isn’t the only thing that’s going to hit you fans hard. In season four, you’ll really be having a lot of mixed emotions.
The cast of Downton Abbey was on the TCA stage along with executive producer Gareth Neame to promote the new season and what will happen in the aftermath of Matthew’s death has been the main topic of discussion. Laura Carmichael said “The death of Matthew really affects the whole family.” Michelle Dockery even admitted that when she heard about Steven’s leaving, she was actually worried. She said “My first reaction was ‘Oh crap, where can the story go now? But, it opens up a new chapter. Initially, I was concerned, but now I’m not.”
In regards to Mary and Matthew’s son, only time will tell. “You don’t see much interaction between the baby and Mary. She looks at him and she sees Matthew.” This is the moment where all your hearts break into a million pieces. However, all may not be lost for Mary, as she will have more than one love interest this season. I bet most of you fans don’t want to find yourself fretting over the idea of another Dan Steven’s situation, but as far as the creators know, there will be a season five next year and everyone will be in it.
Gareth Neame said “I’m now eyeing a fifth season and what those stories will potentially be. I think the show has a lot further to go. We want to make it and we want to make the show people around the world love. When we feel it’s had its time, hopefully we’ll know that before you guys do.”
As for the time frame, this new season takes place in February of 1922 and will go into the spring/summer of 1923. But, the timeline stops right before a major event in history, World War II. Matthew’s death aside, Neame added that “it’s going to be a complex world with Thomas going forward.” He also stated that Sarah’s exit will cause a shake up with the story. “But, he’s always going to have that core thing of wanting to be in control, wanting to find out what’s going on, wanting to dictate things, that rivalry with Carson (played by Jim Carter), he remains a very compelling character.”
Laura Carmichael mentioned that Edith is “the Carrie Bradshaw of the 20’s” because of her new role on the paper. “Edith goes to London a lot and we see a lot of London streets. It will feel like a different era.” according to Carmichael.”
Downton Abbey's fourth season will premiere next year in the US, on January 5th, 2014! It will air in the UK this autumn on ITV.
