Australian born Ebony Buckle, who now resides in London, has known for some time now that in order to truly harness the creative urges she’s felt since she was young, she had to write her own music. A self-confessed shy person, inspired by strong female artists who have forged their own path into the music industry, she admits that “music has really helped me connect to my true self. I feel like the songs I write come straight from my inner dialogue and they are a true expression of who I am”. Her music takes listeners on a journey as she tells stories of romance and heartbreak through the use of rather poetic themes; mermaids and lonely whales – it’s different, but given her growing following, it works.
Her new single “Ghost” which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere, is perhaps her most personal and honest release to date, addressing a very difficult, heart-wrenching time in the lives of herself and her musician husband, Nick Burns. Ebony says of the song: “My husband and I wrote Ghost over Skype when we were separated for nearly 2 years by the Home Office. This song was written in a state of limbo and it feels like the world is in limbo now. We hope it will resonate with people going through similar experiences.”
The song, as music does for many people, proved to be a healing tool for Ebony and Nick, allowing the pair to address their pain and loss but also helped and allowed them to move forward together, and the way the song builds from delicate, sweeping soundscapes into a dramatically haunting release, is lyrical and instrumental testament to what the couple endured.
There is also a video to the track about which Ebony admits: “It’s a very raw video and for a while, I felt too embarrassed to put it out. We do not talk openly about mental health issues in society, and it made me feel very vulnerable. I have come to believe that having these conversations and allowing yourself to be vulnerable only makes you stronger in the long run. I think it shows a different side of me. We are all made up of light and dark and I think perhaps we need to know that everyone has their own unique dark moments, worth expressing.”
