Last spring, it was announced that Downton Abbey‘s upcoming sixth season would be its last. Well, we just got a step closer to that inevitable finale with the recent release of the first trailer for season six.
Season six will pick up six months after season five’s finale, hopefully answering the burning questions from the last season right off the bat. Is Robert Crawley’s ulcer really just an ulcer? Is Branson really gone for good? Will Thomas find love and redemption? Will Carson and Mrs. Hughes find their happily ever after? Will Anna and Bates ever have a day to enjoy their own ever after?
Of course, the trailer doesn’t offer any answers to those questions or any details about season six storylines at all, but it does offer up a snippet from Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) himself as he speaks to our beloved Mr. Carson (Jim Carter): “If I could stop history in its tracks, maybe I would. But I can’t, Carson, for neither you nor I can hold back time.”
What the trailer does manage to do, however, is remind us of what a quality show it has been and how our Sunday nights will be a little less elegant without it.
While Downton‘s U.K. premiere is September 20, here in the States we will have to wait for its January 3rd, 2016 release on Masterpiece.
