New Zealand may have embraced Elijah Wood as Frodo, but it seems that they don’t want anything to do with him as a scalping, serial killer.
The country has placed a ban on the general release of his upcoming slasher-film, a remake of Maniac, stating that it is “too graphic and disturbing for the public.”
According to the New York Daily News, “The Office of Film and Literature Classification’s action means Maniac — a remake of the 1980 slasher film about a killer who scalps his victims — cannot be screened anywhere other than film festivals or as part of academic study. DVDs of the film will not be allowed for sale.”
Summarizing their reasons for the ban, the government agency went on to say, “The murders are depicted in first-person perspective, inviting a viewer’s vicarious participation. While the feature does not actively promote or support this material, the tacit invitation to enjoy cruel and violent behavior through its first-person portrayal and packaging as entertainment is likely to lead to an erosion of empathy for some viewers.”
So although it looks like Elijah won’t be scaring the pants off of anyone in New Zealand, they will still get a glimpse of the star in the upcoming Hobbit film.
