Emily Henry spent her childhood immersed in fantastical novels, stories and poems. Using the influence of these strong and charismatic characters she would read about, she began writing her own music, ultimately crafting songs that are relatable, transformative and important. Her upcoming album, The New World, comes after a five-year absence and features songs that are “stories about love and magic and what it means to be a person.” The songwriter further confides the tracks are, “all about vulnerability and connection, feeling your way in the dark toward something new.” Today, PopWrapped are delighted to premiere the first single to be taken from the collection, “I See The Light”, and its video.
The track – featuring spacious synths that glide under tranquil and emotive vocals – narrates finding hope in dark and uncertain times, and how wonderful the feeling is when sadness and anxiety is in the past. “I See The Light” holds particular meaning in today’s times, what with the rampant mental health crisis facing the world due to the current isolation and uncertainty from the pandemic.
“I See The Light” was influenced by Emily Henry’s own experiences grappling with and ultimately finding inner happiness. The lyrics also draw inspiration from acclaimed author Naomi Alderman’s science fiction novel The Power, in which women across the world share a power to protect themselves with electrical jolts emitting from them; the song is a reminder to all those who hear it that all we have the power within ourselves to find solace, happiness and empathy, no matter how hard the struggle is, as Emily herself says: “You can get there – it might be a hard journey, but the new world is out there if you are determined enough.” In the accompanying visuals, with dazzling choreography and accomplished modern dancers, she is seen in a dark room grasping and reaching for a light above which further highlights the meaning of coming to greatness despite hardships weighing us down.
