When Disney announced that they were green lighting Girl Meets World, a spin-off of Boy Meets World, fans of the original series were of course excited. The premiere episode evoked nostalgia as well as introducing a new set of characters we could love and follow. Unfortunately, the past in which the series was built on would prove to be its undoing.

Let’s face it, the biggest problem that Girl Meets World had was that it couldn’t live up to the original. And the parallels that it built with Boy Meets World only served to highlight that flaw. For one thing, Maya and Riley are not Cory and Shawn, and Cory is no Mr. Feeny. The fans of course noticed, and the endless parade of BMW stars that was meant to shore up this series, only honed the point even more.

But one returning Boy Meets alumni brought a fresh take. Oh yes there were plenty of references to the past, but this character had an unexpected twist. And this character is none other than Will Freidle’s, Eric Matthews.

Unlike the holy trinity of Shawn, Cory and Topanga who seem just stuck on familiarity just like the entire show. Eric for his part, brought in an amazing arc that just spanned two episodes. The idiot savant older brother is now a politician! The show played with his past but did not choose to wallow in it, and it gave him a really unexpected future. And ow that Girl Meets World has been cancelled, it opens a world of possibilities. 

What I’m saying is, don’t renew Girl Meets World. It already had its run; it didn’t work.

What we truly need is an Eric Matthews political comedy series!

Think about it, there will be no parallels with Boy Meets World. The show won’t be about school or growing up, it’ll be political satire! We get a character that we love but he would be moving in a very different direction. Eric Matthews was elected a Senator in Girl Meets World. Now imagine him in Washington D.C., the thought of that alone makes you laugh, right?

It will also push the other characters in the Meets World franchise to find a new niche. Shawn could wind up his communications director, Jack Hunter could return as a corporate lobbyist, Topanga could be a legal adviser! We have never seen any of this characters in that environment before. There is also a lot of room to grow for this show. It could progress to Eric becoming President (we know you laughed at that). He could appoint a 100 year old Mr. Feeny as Secretary of the Fence! (Did you see what I did there?)

Imagine him doing the Feeny call in Cabinet meetings, or when barging in the Pentagon. Plus Eric is single, we could pair him with anyone even Maitland Ward could return as Rachel. And with what is happening in the world today, it could serve as political commentary. It’ll be funny but also socially relevant! I even though of a perfect title for the series, “Mr. Squirrels Meets Washington.”
