Crafting what can only be described as a unique blend of psychedelia-infused alt-rock and classic country-folk, Eric Schroeder is a musician in his own lane entirely. Armed with epic guitar solos that switch into funky melodic harmonies, Schroeder’s brand new album, The Crucifixion of Eric Schroeder, which officially drops tomorrow but PopWrapped are delighted to premiere today, proves that he’s a jack of all trades. Need convincing? How many artists can blend power rock (opening number “Be Alone”) with country (“Another Fight”) and somehow make them work in almost perfect harmony?
This new record isn’t Schroeder’s first project of the year either; back in April, he dropped The Kid, on which he once again worked with labelmate Kevin Basko (The Lemon Twigs, Rubber Band Gun, Foxygen, and just on the back of both albums alone, he could quite rightly be considered one of the most interestingly versatile creatives on the rise today.
Asked about the song-writing process and how he chose which to include on the record, he adds: “Half of the songs were written on a month-long writing spree, while the others were picked from a back catalog of three months’ worth of music. This album is intended to be as deep in its country and folk roots just as it is deep in rock and roll music, while still never completely one or the other. These are some of the best character narratives I have written and also some of my most personal and transparent songs.”
He concludes, addressing the inspiration to and behind his new work: “This album was inspired by my addition of an electric band to my songs. It had an influence on me to try and write songs that sounded more suitable for a band and to write songs that were simpler in terms of the music itself. My biggest inspiration is the self-doubt and self-depreciation that forces me to write more songs and to a higher and different quality.”
