Chris Hemsworth is set to play a fearless, no-nonsense mercenary, Tyler Rake, in his upcoming film Extraction. Set in the backdrop of India and Bangladesh, the film will see Hemsworth engaging in hand-to-hand combat and gun-fights to save his employer’s son. The film is going to be the second venture of AGBO, the newly-found production house run by The Russo Brothers.
Being set in India, the film has gained massive media attention and pre-release approval from the public in the South Asian market. Joe Russo’s visit to India during the promotional tour of Avengers: Endgame made the film more appealing to the audience there as soon as the word was out. After multiple title changes and the details pretty much under wraps, the film is long-awaited and is about to stream on Netflix after limited release next month.
Until then, let’s find out how the film came along and what else do we know about “Extraction.”
The Plot
The official synopsis of Extraction reads:
Tyler Rake, a fearless black market mercenary, embarks on the deadliest extraction of his career when he’s enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord.
On an official basis, this is the only thing that is out in the open right now. But from the film’s first look (see pic below), where we see Hemsworth sharing the screen with “the kid” mentioned in the synopsis played by Rudraksh Jaiswal, it does look like an intense extraction.
Production
The film’s popularity is on constant rise as the film is being produced by The Russo Brothers, who have previously helmed MCU films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). The latter film is currently the highest-grossing film in cinematic history.
In 2015, Russo Brothers formed AGBO, their film production company, with Mike Larocca as President. The studio’s first film, 21 Bridges starring another MCU actor Chadwick Boseman was released in 2019. During the post-production of Endgame, it was announced that the Russo Brothers would produce a film titled Dhaka set in a backdrop of Bangladeshi mafia with Joe Russo writing and Hemsworth starring.
Sam Hargrave Making Debut
Sam Hargrave has served as chief stunt coordinator with The Russo Brothers since Captain America: Civil War. He has served as extras on film sets and has even acted small parts in films like Atomic Blonde (2017). Hargrave was brought on board as a director as a part of AGBO’s Artists Collective agenda, where Russo Brothers are trying to get new talent to explore and burst themselves out to the scene.
This will be Hargrave’s directorial debut. With such a talented cast working on the film, he’s got a real chance to get his foot established in Hollywood.
The Cast
Rudraksh Jaiswal and Chris Hemsworth will be playing the lead plot characters of the son of a crime lord and Tyler Rake, respectively.
The cast addition which everyone is excited about is David Harbour. Harbour is known for his role as Jim Hopper in Stranger Things, for which he has been nominated for a Golden Globe. Harbour’s role is in shadows as of yet, but it looks like we’ll see him having a nice fist fight with Hemsworth somewhere in the film.
The next in the cast is Indian actor Randeep Hooda. Randeep Hooda is a well-known actor in India, known for his extensive work in independent cinema and playing off-beat characters. A couple of days ago, Randeep’s first look from the film was released. From the looks of his uniform, he either plays an ally of Hemsworth, or he plays some law-enforcement guy who is trying to stop Hemsworth’s character, Tyler Rake.
Derek Luke, who is famous for his portrayal of Counsellor Kevin Porter in 13 Reasons Why is also a notable inclusion in the cast. Another famous Indian actor Manoj Bajpayee has been confirmed to play a major role in the film. Bajpayee is a recipient of Asia Pacific Screen Awards and is known for playing serious, no-nonsense characters in Indian films.
The other cast members playing undisclosed characters include Marc Donato and Fay Masterson.
Title
The film’s poster is not unveiled yet. The film went into production with the working title Dhaka. The title was then changed to Out of Fire. In February 2020, Extraction was revealed to be the final title. The film may release in the Indian market with Dhaka as the title; however, this piece of information cannot be confirmed.
Release
The film is set to hit Netflix on April 24, 2020. With the cast pictures being released frequently, the trailer might drop soon.
