Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, the duo that make up Flagship, Drake Margolnick and Michael Finster, are relatively unknown to a lot of people, but with the release of this 5-track collection, that might not be the case for long.
Opening with “Merry Us, Carry On,” the EP gets off to an interesting start, thanks to the musicianship and instrumentation providing the track with a subtle groovy undertone which may not be liked by all those who give it a listen.
“Not So Bad,” however, is much better, with a far catchier rhythm that is hard to resist tapping your feet or clicking your fingers along to. Title track “Faded,” meanwhile, is the stand-out track of the collection, helped by a strong vocal performance and a chorus boasting an impressive guitar undercurrent and simple, catchy lyrics.
In following up with “I Want You,” the duo introduce the most upbeat number, which is sure to go down a storm on the tour the pair have recently embarked on. The ‘ooh-ooh’ vocal in the background will no doubt soon find itself echoing around venues as scores of people belt it back to the band in unison.
Closing number “Nothin’” goes on to provide a more country feel to the band’s music, demonstrating their versatility, and although it picks up about halfway through and the track itself is far from terrible, in comparison to what has gone before, it makes for a considerably lacklustre ending.
Despite this, on the whole, the EP makes for a great introduction to a band who may yet manage to secure their place in the music world.
