The former Republican Senator of Pennsylvania and US Presidential hopeful, Rick Santorum, has set his sights on Hollywood, with the aim of making faith-based, Christian-oriented, family-friendly films.

Santorum has been elected as the CEO of EchoLight Studios, a Texas based production company, and is weeks away from closing a $20 million film fund that will be used to produce, finance, market and distribute, their family-friendly films. Santorum has been assisting in the raising of the funds for the past six months with investors being mainly wealthy Texans, who are novices in film, but are supportive of the movies EchoLight intends to make, but does also include a number of smaller investors, including Santorum himself.

The former Senator intimated that the currently made faith-based films weren’t religious enough, saying: “Here’s what I think of Hollywood—we’re looking for talented people who want to make quality films… We want good writers, actors and producers who want to make honest, uplifting content.” He went on to say “There’s a lot of good family movies produced in Hollywood, but in almost every one of them there’s a scene where… I say, ‘Why did they put that gratuitous sex or language, or violence in there?’… We won’t be doing that”

He added: “I don’t want to preach to anybody, I just want to portray faith as it really is, and we’re going to be telling a lot of true-life stories, and we’re going to make them comfortable even for people who are not of faith, because they are honest. That’s the challenge for us, and it’s what Hollywood tends to shy away from.”

Currently in post-production, EchoLight are set to release a film called Hoovey, in 2014. Directed by Sean McNamara (Soul Surfer) and starring Patrick Warburton (Men in Black II), Lauren Holly (NCIS) and Cody Linley (Hannah Montana). Hoovey tells the true story of Eric ‘Hoovey’ Elliott, a young and promising basketball player whose life was threatened by a near fatal brain tumour, causing him to have to relearn to walk, talk and perform day-to-day activities, but with medical pills piling up, only the family’s faith, and their love for one and other can offer hope.

Also in the pipeline for Santorum and EchoLight is, Seasons of Gray: A modern day retelling of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and The Redemption of Henry Myers: A western about a bank robber whose partner betrays him and leaves him for dead, but is saved by a widow and her children and through their influence, he begins to rethink his life. But when his old partners show up he begins to question himself again and is torn between the revenge he desires or finally finding Redemption.
