From scrolling through your Twitter feed during breaks, to stalking your friends on Instagram, social media has become a part of everyday life. But what happens when one click of a button, unfriending someone, goes completely wrong? The sentiment that social media is evil is taking on a whole new meaning with new horror movie Friend Request. The movie, set to premiere in theaters this September, explores the more troubling side of social media, with a demonic and supernatural twist.
Popular college student Laura has tons of friends, both on Facebook and IRL. She graciously accepts social outcast Marina’s online friend request, until Marina crosses the line and Laura unfriends her. To everyone’s shock, Marina takes her own life in a ritual meant to torment Laura, which appears in a video posted on Laura’s profile. Even though it wasn’t Laura who posted the video, or other creepy content that begins appearing on her page, her Facebook friend count begins to dwindle as a result. When her real-life friends start dying mysterious, cruel deaths, Laura must figure out how to break the deadly curse before it’s too late.
Written and directed by German director Simon Verhoeven, Friend Request first premiered in Germany in January 2016, but has taken a bit longer to reach the states. The movie stars Alycia Debnam-Carey (The 100, Fear The Walking Dead) as popular college student Laura, Liesl Ahlers in her feature film as a troubled and lonely Marina, William Mosely (The Chronicles of Narnia) as Tyler, Brit Morgan (Supergirl) as Olivia, and Connor Paolo (Stake Land, Gossip Girl) as Kobe.
Fiend Request is set to hit theaters September 22. Catch a first look at the movie by watching the trailer below, and decide for yourself whether clicking the unfriend button is worth risking a witches’ curse.
