As Dwayne Johnson’s career has continued to go from strength to strength after he switched the wrestling ring for the big screen, fans of G.I. Joe might be a little disappointed to learn that the highly anticipated next movie in the franchise — G.I. Joe 3 — has had to be delayed due to Johnson’s other commitments.
It’s been more than three years (yes, really!) since G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and, now, Storm Shadow actor Byung-Hun-Lee has confirmed that production on its follow-up has been put on hold due to the increasingly busy schedules of its cast members — though, in particular, that of Johnson.
Lee told LRM:
I heard from the studio that there’s a possibility to do the third one, but I think they’re waiting for the actors’ schedules. They’re arranging the schedules for the actors, especially Dwayne Johnson.
Johnson featured heavily in the 2013 movie as Roadblock and went on to become the star of the franchise, supplanting previous lead Channing Tatum, who has since gone on to star in two box office smashes, Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL.
As of the moment, little to no information regarding the new film on its planned shooting schedule or cast has been announced, although it is believed that D.J. Caruso will direct the third installment.
Johnson, a former pro-wrestler who went by the moniker The Rock, has become a box-office sensation in recent years thanks to his roles in movies such as Central Intelligence alongside Kevin Hart and the Fast and The Furious franchise. He also has several other films in the pipeline, including San Andreas 2, a voice role in Disney’s Moana and Jumanji 2. His TV series Ballers also continues to pull in impressive audiences.
