The fourth season premiere of Game of Thrones managed to pull in its highest ratings in the show’s history and was the highest rated episode of HBO original programming since the series finale of The Sopranos in 2007. It hit 6.6 million viewers in the first run of the episode and over the night managed to rake in over eight (8) million viewers, and crashed HBO GO from the high viewer traffic.
HBO quickly jumped on the chance to pick up the series for not just one, but two seasons, now confirming the show’s longevity towards at least 6 seasons. According to the shows co-creator David Benioff, the show will conclude at 7 seasons, a fact since confirmed with E! Online.
“Game of Thrones is a phenomenon like no other,” Michael Lombardo, president, of HBO Programming stated. “David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling.”
Game of Thrones has only aired one of its confirmed 10 episodes this season, and with multiple seasons set in stone, GOT fans can rejoice at the guaranteed upcoming betrayals and battles for power.
Game of Thrones air Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on HBO
