Gerard Butler could be the star of the upcoming sci-fi movie The Raven (no, it has nothing to do with Edgar Allen Poe). Based on the 2010 short of the same name, Universal acquired the rights to the story and is preparing to distribute the full movie worldwide, with Gold Circle co-financing the production.

Ricardo de Montreuil, the director of the short, will once again sit in the director’s chair for the full-length movie, which is expected to go into production this year.

This will be the third Gold Circle-Universal collaboration, a joint effort that previously gave us the hit movie Pitch Perfect – except where Pitch Perfect involved college drama and singing, The Raven involves superpowers, robotic cops, and giant police ships. So, you know, they’re pretty much the same thing, right?

As of now, the expected release date for The Raven is slated for sometime in 2014.
