Music is forever being redefined, and lately, Austin-born artist Gina Chavez is one of the artists duly redefining what it means to make and share music with a message. Her latest single “Ella”, which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere, is one such piece of music. The follow-up to her insanely upbeat single “She Persisted”, “Ella” is the Spanish sister track; darker, more intense but still packed with the sound, rhythm and message of female empowerment and equality that can and does only come from Gina.
Over the course of her career Gina has performed on stages around the world, mesmerising audiences everywhere with her bi-lingual talents and seen tracks from her last three Spanish albums top the Latin charts on both iTunes and Amazon.. She’s a winner of the rather prestigious Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest with “Siete-D” and has a dedicated fan-base with a strong online following – her NPR Tiny Desk Concert has racked up a million views to date – and such a following looks set to grow even more when she releases her album La Que Manda next month.
Asked about her latest release, Gina had this to say: “Ella is chill. And fierce. This song is dedicated to womxn everywhere – we know what it means to be made small in the eyes of the world. But we also know the truth within us: we are powerful beyond measure. ‘ELLA’ is an anthem to reclaim our bodies, our hearts, our voices. No nos rendimos!”
Offering just a glimpse as to the lyrical strength of the track, she also shared these lyrics: “En la calle corremos peligro / En la casa nos matan también / Y si armamos valor pa’ decirlo / Hasta la iglesia nos calla también.” Translated, they read: “In the streets we are in danger / In the house they kill us too / And if we build up the courage to say so / Even the church will silence our truth.”
