Girls Generation will always retain an untouchable status in music for their pivotal role in the expansion of K-pop on a global scale. The SM Entertainment group has a never-ending list of extensive accomplishments, delivering innately enchanting pop music, and their transition to SM’s current lineup labeled Girls’ Generation-Oh!GG (Taeyeon, Sunny, Yoona, Hyo, and Yuri) is an upper-echelon roster with selective releases due to their industry stature.
SM’s eighth winter album titled 2021 Winter SMTOWN : SMCU Express dropped earlier this week, constructing a beautiful blend of their label’s versatility in music, and marking the first official return of the Oh!GG unit for “Melody”. The song leads in with a soft nod to a simplistically synthy chord and snap beat, before diving into what’s undoubtedly an instant hit from Taeyeon and Sunny’s very first few introductory lines.
The harmonious cheers of each member chanting “Do it ‘cause we like it!” and “humming the melody” presents the sweetest, most addictive chorus delivery, and although a vibey love song, simultaneously doubles as a majestic mention about the group’s capabilities when their voices unite.
Hearing Taeyeon distinctly exhibit an impeccable vocal skill set (as she has consistently achieved in her career), matched with Sunny’s equally precise and unimaginably unique talent maintains such a structure to the track – making the other members’ verses and pre-choruses feel like the cherry on top of this already impactful return to music.
As to be expected, Girls’ Generation-Oh!GG doesn’t have a weak link in the chain, closing out 2021 with a gift for longtime fans that can’t be described outside of being one of the best tracks in their entire discography in every GG incarnation. If Girls’ Generation-Oh!GG has done anything with this release (which is currently sold out at SM’s Global Shop), they have easily added subtle perfection to the group’s longstanding reputation. Now that we know this unit still exists in some capacity, we’re desperately eager to see a full-scale 2022 comeback.
