Glee stars Matthew Morrison and Idina Menzel were among the list of performers announced today for the Olivier Awards (the UK’s answer to the Tony’s) at the end of April. In what will be his first major UK event performance, McKinley High’s Mr Schuester will be giving a “special solo turn” at the event. Morrison, a well-known Broadway face before Glee shot him to international fame, will be hoping to also drum up some interest in his new solo album “Where It All Began” – a collection of classic Broadway standards that will be released this June.
In a press release from the organisers, the Tony Award-winning Wicked star and fellow Glee club director, Menzel, has described herself as “absolutely delighted to have been invited to sing… It will be a great honour to perform in the company of Britain’s theatre elite on such a special night. I can’t wait to be back in London”. Menzel was last toured the UK last year in a solo show where she performed a selection from the musical theatre canon and popular music.
The award ceremony will be hosted by four-time co-host Sheridan Smith and Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) and has a who’s who of UK stage and screen presenting. Those confirmed so far include: Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City), Damian Lewis (Homeland), Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Tim Minchin (Jesus Christ Superstar), and Romola Garai (Atonement). There will also be performances from the current West End casts of A Chorus Line, Top Hat, The Bodyguard and Cabaret, who will be joined by Will Young.
The Olivier Awards take place on 28 April at the Royal Opera House. The event will also be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 from 6pm with Ken Bruce and Anneka Rice interviewing star’s on the red carpet before the main event. ITV will broadcast an extensive highlights programme of the award following the ceremony.
