If you’re like me and you miss the good old days of Glee, then listen up. NBC has a new show coming in the spring called Rise and it’s got everything we loved about Glee.
Starring How I Met Your Mother‘s Josh Radnor and Moana‘s Auli’i Cravalho, this show is about a dedicated teacher who forms a musical theater group made up of struggling and outcast teenagers at a high school….so Glee.
Today NBC released the trailer for Rise and it’s got a fun and optimistic vibe. I think we need more of that on TV.

Cravalho is a rising star for sure, and I can’t wait to hear her sing in this! From the looks of it, it seems like this show will tackle some big issues in high schoolers and will have a bit of drama, so I’m praying it doesn’t get too trashy or preachy.
I’m trying hard not to compare it to Glee too much, but there’s no denying that it’s very similar. If you close your eyes, Josh Randor’s character might as well be Will Schuster. Is that a bad thing? I don’t think so. Glee was problematic for sure, but the heart and music under it all was fresh and fun on TV, so hopefully Rise can succeed where Glee failed. And since Rise is about a musical theater group rather than a glee club, hopefully we’ll get more Broadway songs and show tunes, helping kids discover the joys of theater. From what I’ve read and from what you’ll see below, it seems the group will be performing Spring Awakening, which is an interesting show.
Now, while I did say that the above Rise trailer came out today, back in May a longer one was leaked from the Upfronts, and that one made its rounds on Tumblr. The older trailer made gave off an even stronger Glee vibe, so give that one a watch too.
I mean, come on! Sucky auditions, a teacher cornering singing football players, a closeted gay kid, a principal and coach against the group, a hauntingly beautiful show tune? This is Glee and I’m not even mad.
Rise premiers March 13th at 10pm on NBC, so mark your calendars! Will you be watching this show?
