After Godzilla triumphed at the box office and resonated with the characters’ original and new fan base, Godzilla 2 was inevitable. It was reported in May 2014 that the sequel was officially moving forward, and at San Diego Comic Con that year, it was also confirmed that Legendary Pictures revived the rights to use the fan favorite monsters Mothra, Rodan, and my personal favorite King Ghidorah in upcoming Godzilla films. It is unknown if Aaron Taylor Johnson will return to reprise his role at this point, but we do know that Max Borenstein is currently writing the sequel’s screenplay and director Gareth Edwards is set to return as the director.
Gareth Edwards is currently working on his upcoming contribution to the iconic Star Wars franchise, directing the film Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, which is currently filming. When Edwards finishes the Star Wars stand alone film he’s expected to begin prepping for the Godzilla sequel with a release date set for June 8th, 2018. Recently, Collider
had the chance to speak with Max Borenstein at the TCA’s about Godzilla and the screenwriter said, “I’m writing it now, and it’s really going to be great. I don’t want to go off book and tell you anything that I’m not allowed to tell you. The response to the first film was really exciting, but now that that world is established, we can do bigger and even better things. We’re really stoked.” One option thrown around by Edwards in the past has been his hope to create a Monster Island concept used in the film Destroy all Monsters which could be a major possibility after all of the announced characters.
Borenstein is also the writer for the upcoming King Kong film Kong: Skull Island which is a co-production between Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures starring Tom Hiddleston. It hasn’t been discussed, but is it possible that characters could possibly crossover at one point? I’d say it has some potential. I’m glad to know that Godzilla is making progress, and absolutely can’t wait for another return from the king of all monsters! Regardless of who he comes up against in the next film, let’s remain hopeful that Godzilla will continue to conquer his rivals.
