17 years ago today, Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on the WB network. It was based off of a low budget 90’s film, and people had preconceived notions along with concerns about a potential television series.

I was about 4 1/2 years old at the time and as I don’t remember much at such a young age, I remember watching Buffy and being fascinated. I continued to watch it throughout its superb seven year run which garnered critical acclaim, a devoted fan following, and strong ratings. I grew up with it, as did so many others, because it served as a relatable program for people of all ages.

Buffy was a teenager who was trying to get through high school and the demons that came with it (literally and figuratively).  Though we may not have killed demons we do understand feeling misunderstood by your peers, trying to balance a love life (or lack of) and keeping you’re head above water in high school both socially, and academically.

As the series started to develop, it delved into finding first love, achieving inner stability, and that sometimes we need a true friend to ground us throughout life’s twists and turns, because you can’t face everything alone. When Buffy graduated it managed to keep guiding us through real life issues with genuine sincerity such as; coming out, losing a loved one or parent, addiction, and that you can make mistakes in life and come out of them with a greater self understanding (see season 6).

Any time I need a little bit of guidance I can still turn to it and find it’s relativity in my life today, and know I’m not alone. This is a truly timeless classic series that will live on through young and old viewers for years to come, and deserves to be celebrated on its 17th birthday. Now time to go marathon, Happy Birthday Buffy!
