Today, Richard Griffiths, the actor best known for his roles as Vernon Dursley in Harry Potter and Uncle Monty in Withnail and I, has passed away following complications after heart surgery at the age of 65. He leaves behind a legacy of successful performances, not only as the famous Vernon Dursley, whose memes will probably roam the internet for years to come, but also for his performances in several iconic British classics.
Fellow Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe was the first to pay tribute to Griffiths, by talking about his first days as an actor: “In August 2000, before official production had even begun on Potter, we filmed a shot outside the Dursleys’, which was my first ever shot as Harry. I was nervous and he made me feel at ease.”
On top of that, Griffiths also co-starred in Radcliffe’s first ever play with the title Equus, in which he once again was of tremendous support.
We here at PopWrapped have always been big fans of Griffiths’ performances, and we deeply sympathise with his family. As his agent Simon Beresford said, “Richard brightened my days and enriched the life of anyone he came into contact with. He was a remarkable man and one of our greatest and best-loved actors. He will be greatly missed.”
