The National Society of Film Critics has chosen Inside Llewyn Davis for its award for Best Picture of 2013.  The film, set in 1961, follows folk singer Llewyn Davis as he traverses the New York music scene after the suicide of his partner, voiced by Marcus Mumford of British folk band Mumford & Sons.

Although the film was only released to a limited US audience on December 6, it made the rounds through the film festival circuit in 2013, winning Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and being featured in New York and Toronto. Variety call the movie a “darkly comic odyssey” which waswritten and directed by Ethan and Joel Coen.  The movie was declared the only winner in a line of “independent-minded choices” by the National Society of Film Critics.  In addition to Best Picture, the film won for Best Director, Best Actor for Oscar Isaac, and Best Cinematography.

Other winners include Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine and Jennifer Lawrence for her role in American Hustle.
