INTERVIEW: Sansol The Artist Talks New Album, ‘Sad But True’

Sansol the Artist, as a project, is the brain child of Brooklyn Born, Nashville local Jeremy Claudio. He prides himself a normal guy with way too many emotions to handle on his own, beckoning his listeners to walk through life’s hard seasons together with him. The project launched in 2020 with the release of his debut single “Screenshot”.

With sync placements that include the MLB, ABC, VH1, ESPN, and more, it’s only a matter of time before Sansol the Artist is unavoidable. With inspirations that span from Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, and J Cole to Coldplay, Pink Floyd, and Rufus Du Sol, Sansol is carving his own path as an infectious blend of pop, hip-hop, and rnb. The balance of natural instrumentation and analog synthesis paired with boundary pushing music evocative of genre blending musicians, defines the very being of Sansol the Artist.

Sansol joined us for a few to discuss the details about the album that he has just put out, his collaborations, and more.

PopWrapped (PW) First off, congratulations on the new project. We’re going to dive a little bit deeper into that, shortly. However, first, since this is the first time our audience has heard about you and your artistry – can you tell us a little bit about who you are?

Sansol The Artist (S) Well, what you see is what you get. I am just a normal guy who loves people and loves making cool shit. I’m honestly just trying to keep my shit together through hard seasons and help people along the way.

PW: For me, the first time I heard about you was with one of your tracks being placed in the hit show, “How To Get Away With Murder”. How did it feel when you found out that a track you worked hard on, producing, writing, recording, and mixing and mastering would be placed in such a huge show where thousands would hear?

First! To clarify, the song that they used for that spot is called “Wild” which I worked on with two amazing producer friends of mine here in Nashville named Matt Bronleewe and Dustin Wise. We also had a killer sync team called Resin8 owned by a dear friend of mine, Wendy Duffy win us the spot. Music for Tv / Film is an interesting beast and there is a lot that goes into writing producing and eventually getting the content placed. It’s a super particular lane that I had made a goal of mine since I was in my young teens. I write music with picture and color in mind so a big dream was to have my music used to picture in film/television.

PW: Let’s talk about the album. Sad but True, filled with a lot of scarily relatable tracks that, MANY of us can vibe with but also relate to. This project is rather stunning, and honestly, my brand. I have the sad boy mentality, and this is a project filled with sad boy bops, raps, and rhymes. Would you say this album is a representation of you? Or just a period in your life?

S: HAHAHA! I will gladly join artists like Frank Ocean, Posty, and Drake in the Sad Boy category. I have definitely ALWAYS been kind of a super sensitive guy. Although I grew up in Brooklyn NY so I also have a bit of a tough exterior at times. So a bit of both I think, but, mostly I’m a cuddle bear.

PW: “Be Enough”, a collaboration with Clark Beckham and Daniella Mason. Clark’s vocals on this are insanity, paired with Daniella’s stunning voice and your unique sound – you three did what had to be done. How did this collaboration come about and what do you feel each artist brought to this track?

S: This one is super special to me! So, I actually wrote this song with an AMAZING song writer and friend named Mia Fields. I made a decision while conceptualizing this project that I would only feature Artists that I had a personal friendship with in order to keep the project as close to my heart as possible. I originally wanted Clark to sing on a different track that we ended up running out of time to work through because he was in the middle of getting married in a pandemic. Daniella was actually the original thought for the feature on “Long Way” which also didn’t work out due to timing. About a week before I transitioned to mixing on the album I had this cray idea for the ended and decided to text the both of them to see if they would come over and cut vocals for it. I had a pretty flushed out idea of what I was looking for from them because the three of us have been pretty heavily involved in each other’s music for the past few years. They came in a SLAYED IT!

PW: “Promises”, could relate to this one on so many levels. Were there any experiences in your personal life that influenced this track?

S: Towards the beginning of 2020 I went through a super painful divorce that left me feeling pretty torn up. One of the hardest things to swallow was the idea that I had failed to come through on my promise to be everything that she needed / wanted me to be. Of course this perspective is insanely unhealthy given the fact that NO one person should ever pridefully decide that they can be EVERYTHING for someone else ( no matter the context of the relationship). While walking through some of these unhealthy patterns in therapy my ex-wife was pushing a false narrative on social media that I had abandoned her. As a person who has struggled heavily with abandonment it was awful. So once I realized I was being gas lighted I called up my homie Hak (B.Keyz) and Charlotte Sands and we wrote a song about it lol

PW: “Long Way” with the fantastic Nia Hendricks. Truly, nobody out there right now sounds like her. Tell us a little bit about this collaboration and how it came about.

S: YES Nia is CRAZY TALENTED! So this was an interesting story. As I said earlier I wrote the chorus of this song one day and imagined having Daniella Mason come to the studio to track it. Covid and scheduling made things difficult to nail down. I was on instagram and heard Nia sing and knew that she was the one to sing it. I hit up D and told her that Nia being involved felt provident. I reached out and Nia was into the idea so we finished it out together. She crushed it.

PW: The overall message of this ep is love, pain, hurt, and just sad boy sh*t. What do you hope that our audience can take away from this album? What does this album mean to you?

S: This album is the end of an era and the beginning of a new one for me. I want people to know that acting like you’re perfect is BULLSHIT. We are all crazy and imperfect and we all need help. It’s sad … but it’s true.

PW: Lastly, we want to congratulate you, again, on a beautiful body of work. We’re really stoked to be able to witness the ART that is music & the ART that is.. this project. Are you already working on your next records? If so, what can we expect from you and the music that is to come from you?

S: I have some pretty ambitious goals for the rest of 2020. Stay close because when everyone stops for the year, I won’t.
