As of today, Yahoo! Movies has released an exclusive first look at the final character poster for Iron Man 3. It is, of course, the one we’ve all been waiting for – the one of Tony Stark himself. What’s most interesting about this one is not Tony Stark’s beaten-to-hell Iron Man suit, so much as the seven new ones behind him. Judging by the first trailer, wherein all of Tony’s suits are destroyed, they may not even be his. This begs the question…whose are they? And who is inside them, if anyone at all? These questions may or may not be answered in the upcoming final theatrical trailer for Iron Man 3. Yahoo! Movies will be posting it exclusively on March 5th at noon EST. The official summary of the film is as follows:
“Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?”
As for what we can expect from Tony, the film’s director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) had this to say: “After The Avengers he’s relying on these suits to feel like he’s in any way capable… He surrounds himself with these things almost like a blanket.” And apparently this is exactly what his upcoming nemesis will be playing on.
Of course, a fair bit of controversy has surrounded that character throughout the film’s production. When it was announced that the villain would be The Mandarin, many fans were upset. The character was first introduced in the 1960s, when racial sensitivity was not a priority, and as a result is considered to be an example of generally offensive racial stereotyping. The Mandarin is also identified in the comics as half-Chinese, but the role was given to Sir Ben Kingsley, who is not. This has sparked some accusations of whitewashing in the casting process (although it is relevant to note that Kingsley himself is half Indian).
Also starring in Iron Man 3 are Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love), Guy Pearce (Memento, L.A. Confidential), Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda), and Rebecca Hall (The Town). Paltrow and Cheadle will be reprising their roles as Pepper Potts and Colonel James Rhodes. Pearce will be portraying Dr. Aldrich Killian, a scientist who studies nanotechnology alongside Dr. Maya Hansen (Hall). The roles these two new characters will be playing have been kept under pretty tight wraps, but hopefully we’ll see some of them in the upcoming final theatrical trailer.
Can we expect to see a fourth Iron Man film? Well, regarding the possibility of hanging up the suit after this next jaunt (having just completed his original contract), Robert Downey Jr. had this to say, in an interview with Empire: "Let’s just say the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it.”
Iron Man 3 hits cinemas stateside May 3, 2013.
