There must be a million reasons why Tina Fey loves her husband Jeff Richmond, but I love him for just one: he’s helping take Mean Girls to the Great White Way. If you have been living under a rock let me catch you up to speed. Fey has been hinting at a musical stage version of her cult classic hit film that has spawned many a meme and was probably the only good decision Lindsay Lohan has ever made.
Sitting down with Vulture.com Richmond revealed where they are in the process. Taking cues from the NBC show Smash he remarked “It’s all just laid out structure-wise right now. That’s how early we are. Because you have to take a three-act structure and turn it into a two-act structure and start thinking about it like that, and we’re working! We’re working on it, okay?”
At least Richmond understands how much we want Mean Girls to take the stage! One of the best thing about the movie is Fey’s dialogue and Jeff promises that it will not be lost, and I believe him. He also promises a song completely devoted to Gretchen Weiners and her need adoption of ‘fetch’ into the lexicon of high school girls everywhere.
“‘Fetch’ will be a song, for sure, absolutely. And it will probably reprise itself at some point, just so you know. Gretchen Wieners will have a song. That’s all I can say. But it is fun to think about who is going to get a song — like, Damien will have a couple of songs.”
There is no doubt in my mind that when this show takes the stage it will be a hit. Fey’s writing plus campy/catchy tune?! A musical masterpiece! I do have one request though, can we have a number dedicated to Glen Coco? You go Glen Coco, you go!
