Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow character will return to the big screen in not one, not two, but possibly three movies! The character is confirmed for upcoming Captain America sequel, and will also play a big part in Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, according to Hypable, Marvel are already planning her very own movie, which could be Marvel’s first solo female superhero movie.

Johansson’s character Natasha, alias Black Widow, will be appearing first of all in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which will be out in cinemas in April. Of the upcoming movie, Marvel President Feige said, “We wanted to change the dynamic of the cinematic universe with this film. We wanted Cap and really the entire cinematic universe to be very different at the end of Winter Soldier than it is at the beginning.”

In terms of the Avengers sequel, Feige said, “We start filming the next Avengers film at the end of March…Widow’s part in that is very big. We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. Black Widow’s whole arc is coming to terms with her history – that she’s been a spy, and spies aren’t necessarily trustworthy.”

Speaking to Total Film, director Joss Whedon also discussed Johansson’s role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, saying:

““Natasha is a huge part of the sequel because you do want to concentrate on the people who don’t have their own franchises. She was the most fun for me because she’s not a hero, you know? And it’s something that I read—and I feel bad that I can’t remember who wrote the book—but it’s in one of the books explaining, ‘These guys are heroes, you are a spy. It’s a different thing—it’s a different skill set—and you don’t have their moral high ground or any of that good stuff.’ And that just makes her so interesting to me. So yeah, the stuff I’ve got going on with her in the second one is killer.”

Perhaps most interesting for Black Widow are the plans for her own superhero movie, which would mark the first female superhero movie for Marvel. Feige says they plan on, “Exploring Black Widow even further in her own film…we have some development work with that.”

It’d certainly be nice to see Marvel channelling some serious girl power with a solo movie. If you just can’t wait for Black Widow to get her own epic movie, catch her in Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier, which hits cinemas on April 4, 2014.
