Jared Leto has been out of the acting game for a few years, but he’s making a shocking return playing Rayon, a transsexual woman dying of AIDS. This true story titled The Dallas Buyers Club also stars Matthew McConaughey as a Texan man with AIDS in the 1980s who smuggled alternative drugs over the border from Mexico. The film is already expected to be a contender for the 2014 awards season.
Leto says he dropped to about 116 pounds for the role, but it wasn’t just about appearing sickly skinny. He says "I had done similar things with weight, but this was different…I think the role demanded that commitment…It was about how does that effect how I walk, how I talked, who I am, how I feel. You know, you feel very fragile and delicate and unsafe."
Leto has been in Austin this week to promote the documentary Artifact, which chronicles his band 30 Seconds to Mars’ legal battle with EMI. The group just recently finished their latest album. It includes the song “Up In The Air” which, as PopWrapped previously reported, will be launched into space.
What do you think of The Dallas Buyers Club so far? Could this be Jared Leto’s ticket to Oscar gold?
