Hey Stevie Wonder! Glee just called to say they love you! That’s right, Gleeks! Stevie Wonder is the latest musical icon that will be given the tribute treatment per Hollywood.com. Wonder joins the list of musical legends to be honored by the show, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, just to name of a few. Ryan Murphy, Glee’s head honcho, is working on the tribute to Mr. Wonder.
The Glee head scribe/executive producer wunderkind spilled the beans to Hollywood.com last Wednesday night during the Paley Center for Media panel, where he was being honored with the first ever PaleyFest Icon Award (check out our story about that). “I think we’re going to do a big Stevie Wonder tribute toward the end of this year, which I’ve wanted to do for four years,” he says. “So that’s my big thing.” 500 musical numbers later, he is finally getting his shot at doing so.
Murphy states that “He (Stevie Wonder) was my favorite when I was a kid, so yes, I think we’re going to do a Stevie Wonder tribute.” The music icon is apparently someone near and dear to Murphy’s heart.
Glee has already performed one of Wonder’s songs in the past. In Season 2 (for those of you who need reminding), Artie serenaded Brittany with “ Isn’t She Lovely?” as an apology for calling her dumb and as a way to ask her to prom (he was denied!). The strip down version of that hit was an iTunes hit.
While script has not been penned just yet, it cannot be confirmed whether Wonder will get the hour-long episodic homage like MJ or Madonna. Hopefully it does because picking out Wonder songs to use should not be that hard to do since Wonder has had a decades- long musical career with 22 Grammys under his belt.
Does this latest Glee tribute excite you? What Stevie Wonder songs are you hoping to hear? (Psss, “Sign, Sealed, Deliver” for Klaine, Mr. Murphy!)
