It looks like a Godzilla remake started filming right under our noses in Vancouver! Director Gareth Edwards posted a welcome message of sorts online in the form of a short video shot on-set. The sixteen-second video doesn’t tell us much, but it does look like they’re filming on a Japanese airport set. With a central cast of mainly Caucasian actors, this is very interesting to us.
Earlier this week it was announced that veteran actor Ken Watanabe had signed on just before principal filming began. Just like the rest of the film’s central cast, the particular part Watanabe will be playing has been kept under wraps. The Japanese actor is best known for playing the incredibly wealthy Saito in Christopher Nolan’s hit Inception.Watanabe’s Godzilla co-stars include Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, and David Strathairn.
Here at PopWrapped, we have to ask: What on Earth could it be about this remake that has been attracting such big names and award-winners to the project? The last time there was a non-Japanese film about Godzilla it was the nineties, it starred Matthew Broderick, and it is almost universally acknowledged that it was the worst Godzilla movie ever made! On the production end of this film there aren’t any names associated with cinematic excellence. So what could it be? Our guess is that there are a whole lot of zeroes on the ends of those salaries.
What do you think? Are we missing something? Will Godzilla (2014) end up surprising us all by becoming a box office smash?
