Ivytide Unveil The Video For “call it what u want”

We all had a great time shooting and goofing off in the video, and hope our listeners can enjoy the song the way we do…”

They say that mutual passions can result in great things. A mutual passion for lo-fi certainly has proven such is true for Nathan Gagné, Jamie Snytte and Kyle Ruggiero, AKA Ivytide. They met in a recording studio and have gone on to create a number of brilliant bedroom pop songs, with deep, meaningful, intricate lyrics and catchy melodies. Their latest single “call it what u want” is an indie-pop bop that addresses and encapsulates, both instrumentally and lyrically, the excitement of a new relationship and the instability that comes with it – and PopWrapped are delighted to premiere its video.

The band say of the creative process behind the video and its shoot: “We teamed up with our good friend Nicholas Spence and shot the music video in the place we all grew up, the suburbs of Montreal. In the video, we try to capture both excitement and unease of the themes of the song. For example, the chaotic shots from the car window portray the turbulent feelings of not knowing where you stand in a relationship. We all had a great time shooting and goofing off in the video, and hope our listeners can enjoy the song the way we do with their friends. They add that the theme of the song: “…comes from the stress of putting a label on a relationship that started as something casual. The lyrics “call it what u want” are a direct response to when hot boy/girl summer gets too serious.

Asked about how “call it what u want” came to be, they share that it was made during the pandemic. “Jamie had this acoustic guitar lick that got stuck in all our heads for the longest time, so we did the natural thing and added punk drums and bass to it. Experimenting with those types of sounds for the drums was relatively new for us. Nathan was then able to follow up with the lyrics and melodies that came to him pretty naturally. We finished recording the entire song within a day. It was one of the fastest songs we ever completed in one sitting.”
