Castle Rock is quickly approaching and we had the privilege of speaking with the wonderful Jane Levy who stars in the upcoming Stephen King and JJ Abrams series for Hulu.
“I play Jackie and Jackie is Castle Rock’s one and only taxi driver but she’s also the self proclaimed historian of Castle Rock and she’s a little freak [laughs].” Levy tells us about her character, “She’s been described as Tracy Flick and Ed Gein in one of the scripts.” adding “She’s a fan of the horror genre herself, she’s grown up in Castle Rock listening to all the legends but has never experienced them firsthand.”
Obviously with a role like Jackie, it can be assumed she will interact with a fair amount of cast members and Levy shares who we can expect her to share screentime with. “I spent most of my time with Melanie [Lynskey’s] character, which is fun because we’re great pals.” With that being said, she admits it’s the appearance of two others that gives her a taste of Castle Rock’s mystery, explaining, “The arrival of Henry Deaver and ‘The Kid’ is the most exciting thing that’s ever happened in her life.”
Being a fictional world that acknowledges the lore of renowned Stephen King, one thing we wanted to know is if there are connections outside of the known Shawshank Redemption and The Shining, which Levy hints at by stating “Jackie brushes up very closely with a very famous Stephen King character.” but isn’t able to divulge any more on who this mystery person could be.
One of Levy’s most popular projects thus far has been the 2013 reboot of the insanely popular Evil Dead and fans have made it known they hope to see it continue one day. So what does Levy think of all the Evil Dead sequel talk? She tells us, “I’d be interested. It’s funny, with the Evil Dead creators – nobody can rile a crowd like they do. They really know how to keep that hype going.” The Castle Rock star continues, “I have an Instagram, and did one of those ‘ask me anythings’ and literally every question asked was ‘Will you do Evil Dead 2’ but it’s good because people really like it.”
As far as Levy’s representation in horror, she explains that each project has created a different atmosphere, saying, “It just seems like [horror] is where I’m gonna go [laughs]. Evil Dead was the most extreme, then there was Don’t Breathe which was much more psychological suspense and Castle Rock is more small town mystery.” She concludes, “Through working on horror, I’ve definitely become a fan of [the genre] myself.”
Finally, with a series like Castle Rock everyone wants to get an idea of who you can cheer for or who you want to see fail and Levy details where Jackie fits into that spectrum – “My character really feels like an audience member who is on your team. She’s watching everyone and is really stoked about the events so I think people will really like her a lot.”
Castle Rock will begin offering its episodes to viewers on Hulu, beginning on July 25, 2018.
