For those of you who have been caught up with other things online this week, there is an origin story for Peter Pan floating about over at Warner Bros with Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice) in negotiations to direct.

What’s more is that we are getting closer and closer to the start of filming and having an actual movie on our hands. Now Deadline has reported the first bit of casting news in the form of Javier Bardem.

Yes, Bardem is making Pan look good. And, he’s being offered the role of the pirate Blackbeard. Bardem isn’t officially attached to the role just yet, he’s just been offered it. Still, it’s pretty exciting given the penchant for villains the smoldering actor seems to have. He has been the villain in three big Hollywood movies so far, landing an Oscar for his role in No Country for Old Men. With that kind of pedigree, Blackbeard could be very interesting placed in his hands.

Pan, being written by Jason Fuchs, is to be an origin story about a young orphan who is whisked away to Neverland where he becomes the savior of the natives and leads a rebellion against evil pirates. Of course, we all know he ends up being our loveable Peter (unless you’re a Oncer, then he’s just plain evil) who makes a living out of humiliating Captain James Hook. The script is based off the original JM Barry novel.

This isn’t Pan’s first big movie foray and it certainly won’t be the last. It also isn’t Blackbeard’s first major movie role, either. Ian McShane played the villainous Blackbeard most recently in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

No filming date has been set for Pan and no casting has been confirmed.
