As an artist praised by several media outlets and publications for her ability to share honest and raw stories through her music, Jennie Harluk’s star is well on the rise. She’s already worked with several established producers including Andy Park, who has helped create tracks by Ariana Grande and Neon Trees, and she’ll drop an EP in 2022. Before that however, PopWrapped are delighted to premiere the video for her latest single “The Fool.”
Jennie says of the song: “’The Fool’ portrays the heart-breaking reality a lot of us unfortunately feel in our lives. When you give your absolute all to somebody; stick with them through their lows, disregard the way they treat you as toxic because you care for them, put up with their lies, betrayal, in this case cheating – all because you’re too afraid to let them go. But in the end, they end up leaving you. And you feel stupid, lonely, hurt, like a fool.
I think the fool is a bit ironic in a way. Musically, it’s happy, upbeat and driving. But lyrically it’s devastating. Everyone tells you “it’s their loss” “the joke is on them” “they don’t know what they’re missing” in attempt to try and make you feel better – but all you can focus on is how blind you were, how toxic it was, how much of yourself you gave up just to keep them.”
She goes on to add: “’The Fool’ was a song I needed when I wrote it. I think for me my best songs come when I’ve finally passed or moved on from particular situations. This one was after a breakup, I was so sad and I think this song let me release some left-over anger and feelings and emotion – and tie it all together with a bow to let go of and move on. Being a songwriter is kind of funny like that, I wouldn’t recommend dating us. We write songs for you & then we write songs about you … but all for the love of music & good lyricism!”
Asked about the creative process of and for the video, Jennie shares: “The visuals for ‘The Fool’ came immediately. I have a “condition” – if that’s what you call it haha – called Synesthesia; which is the collision of senses. For me, when I meet and interact with people – they’re automatically associated with a colour and that colour almost never changes. Some people are orange – people I’d go to for advice or wisdom – and different shades match different people, some are purple – (usually empaths – …it’s really cool because I feel like I get a cheat sheet on people’s personalities. But this also applies to music, when a song is being built – I can see it’s colour and texture. For ‘The Fool’, the colour was a deep elegant green, cream, and deep red. I saw textures like hardwood floors, flower petals, the burnt auburn colour of liquor. I had a clear vision for everything from the photos to the promo to the video. And Isabella Morton helped me capture that perfectly.”
