According to a number of recent reports including a story by Digital Spy, the popular film series John Wick will soon be getting a third installment. According to John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2 director Chad Stahelski, the third film's script is currently in progress.
“We’re currently in the middle of writing it right now,” Stahelski said in an interview with Collider. "It’s more of a how fast can we get our sh*t together. But I would assume that if not by the end of this year, the beginning of next year.”
The upcoming film, which will pick up after the plot of Chapter 2, will apparently be giving viewers a more in-depth look at the world of the semi-retired hitman. Rather than going all-out with more explosions and intricately structured action sequences, the upcoming film will likely dig deeper into the film's cinematic universe. That is, if Stahelski is to be believed.
"We want, not so much to go bigger on the third one, but to show you more of the intricacies of the world," he said. "I feel like there are all these different subtleties that I skipped over in Number Two, that I'd like to go back to on [the third film] and show you the inner workings of different parts of New York. So rather than massive set-pieces, I'd like to show you cooler and more intricate ones."
John Wick: Chapter 2 saw feared hitman John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, forced out of retirement by his former associate, Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio), an Italian crime lord who needs Wick to help him take over an international assassins’ guild. The film's supporting cast was also strong, featuring names like Common, Laurence Fishburne, Ruby Rose, Bridget Moynahan, John Leguizamo, and Ian McShane.
There's no word yet on which stars will be returning for Chapter 3, but Chad Stahelski will likely take to the director's chair yet again, though he has yet to officially confirm his role.
“Currently I’m acting as prep director,” he explained. “Hopefully everything will work out time wise. Of course — I would love to… If you really watch the first and second one, there’s only one place it can go — so I’ll let you sort that out.”
Stay tuned for updates regarding the upcoming third addition to the John Wick franchise.
