While we’re eagerly awaiting the release of Despicable Me 2 this summer Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are teasing fans with information about their spin-off film, Minions. The latest bit of news concerns casting with Deadline announcing on Tuesday that Mad Men’s Jon Hamm is joining American sweetheart, Sandra Bullock, in lending their voices to the film.

The spin-off focuses on the charming little yellow henchmen that stole our hearts in the 2010 film. Though these beings have existed since the dawn of time always ready and eager to help the latest in a long line of “ambitiously evil villains”, their knack of screwing things up has resulted in Minions consistently ruining plots and plans and ultimately destroying those that they serve.

The film is set in the 1960s (before the events of the Despicable Me films) and at an all-time low time for available super-villains to serve. To ward off depression and find themselves a new evil master, three Minions end up at a villain convention. There they end up competing to serve Scarlet Overkill who is described as having an Audrey Hepburn sense of style and appearance which hides her “world domination ambition and her aspirations to become the world’s first female super-villain”. Bullock is set to voice Scarlet with Hamm as her inventor husband, Herb Overkill.

The 3D animation is set for a release on 19 December 2014. Despicable Me 2 will be in cinemas on 28 June in the UK and 3 July in the US.
