Chanel is set to celebrate its centennial anniversary, and what better way to do so than to create a film about its founder, Coco? The brand’s current creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, will be trying his hand at directing this short film, which will star Keira Knightley. She is the current face of Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle perfume campaign. The UK actress is said to have been hand-picked by Lagerfeld himself, and rumor has it that Lagerfeld is designing Knightley’s gown for her upcoming wedding.
The short film will be shot on location in the beautiful seaside town of Deauville. This was where Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel opened her very first boutique, which was funded by her lover, a very wealthy British aristocrat. It sounds a bit like a fairytale, doesn’t it?
Lagerfeld has ordered detailed retro sets to be installed in the seaside resort where a young Coco Chanel had her aunt and sister walk around in her handmade creations in order to attract customers. Chanel’s image was somewhat irreversibly tarnished when it came to light that the designer had, according to de-classified French files uncovered by Hal Vaughan, been a Nazi agent during WWII, but her contributions to the world of fashion are too overwhelming to ignore.
As for Karl Lagerfeld himself, he is known for being extremely dedicated and disciplined when it comes to every project he spearheads. While he has played himself in a film before, this is very likely his first time being behind the camera, and we can’t wait to see how his creative flair shows itself in this particular project.
Not much is known about the exact subject of the film, aside from the obvious theme of Chanel, so we’re excited to see the final product. It will also feature appearances from Clotilde Hesme, a French actress, as well as model Brad Kroenig. Kroenig’s four-year-old son, who is Lagerfeld’s godson, will also appear in it. The film will be screened at Chanel’s Cruise Show in May.
