While most music/entertainment videos you see might only be a few minutes long, the latest from LA-based rocker Kate Clover, “Channel Zero TV” clocks in at 20 – yes 20. It’s a romp of music, mystery, magic and more, and was directed by Rebecca Knox who you might know from her work on the hit show Orange Is The New Black. The title of the video is a direct nod to Clover’s debut EP Channel Zero, out later this year, while the visuals themselves feature guest appearances from Jared Swilley of the Black Lips and Kendrick “Ice” McDonald among others. PopWrapped caught up with Kate to find out more about the video, the inspiration behind it and how she got her guests involved.
Hey Kate! “Channel Zero TV” turned out awesome. Can you talk a little bit more about the creative process behind putting this together and some of its inspirations?
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! It was a lot of fun to make but covid restrictions definitely made things difficult. Luckily, Rebecca – the director – and I see limitations as an opportunity to get even more creative, which really pushed us to do a lot. Originally, I was asked to film a live set but that felt too lackluster. We met up and wrote a script that made us laugh and we went with it.
The show was inspired by David Lynch and Jon Waters. They have a way of creating their own world with incredible characters. I’m very drawn to that type of storytelling. I wanted it to have the spirit of the Cramps but set in a conventional setting of a talk show.
On “Channel Zero TV”, you have a lot of guests, cameos, and collaborated with a lot of other creatives. What was it like working with all of them and how did you bring them all together?
Everyone that was part of the cast were close friends. We filmed everything in 16 hours, which was so ambitious – but we were all so eager to make something that we threw caution to the wind. There was a lot of debauchery on set that day; it was inevitable. We hadn’t played a show all year or even seen one another so collectively we all cut loose. There were so many protocols to ensure safety and luckily everyone respected the rules.
What was your favorite part of shooting this video?
Playing a live set and creating with friends.
