While the character was made legendary thanks to the iconic portrayal by Melissa Joan Hart, a new Sabrina the Teenage Witch will be hitting the small screen.

Netflix recently announced that Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka will be taking on the role of the famous witch for the currently untitled project based on the Archie Comics character’s most recent page interpretation, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Described as “tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist” in the recent press release, the series will consist of 20 episodes and will still focus on the challenges of Sabrina’s life as a half witch, half mortal, but with a much darker edge than what you may be familiar with in previous adaptations.

The series is described as one that “imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft… This adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature—half-witch, half-mortal—while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.”

Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has said that Kiernan Shipka was at the top of everyone’s wish list when casting talks first began and that they are thrilled to have her on board.
