LA artist Kit Major is making quite a name for herself as an artist whose songs are both infectious, honest and immensely relatable, and her new single “Party Street”, which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere, is no different. We caught up with Kit to find out the story behind the track, what she’s got lined up and the two records she’d struggle to choose between if she could only listen to one for the rest of her life.
What inspired you to write “Party Street”?
I wrote “Party Street” thinking about how the rest of my twenties were going to look like- feeling a strange and awkward guilt that I don’t go out and party as much as I wish I could. This song is a reflection on my insecurities and how my anxiety, depression and OCD have emotionally aged me. I want to take my innocence and freedom back, so I’m going to move to Party Street where I can dance and be myself freely, exactly the way I am without any apologies or regrets.
The track has a great energy and a 1980’s club groove to it. Did you have any bands or artists and their songs in mind when you wrote it?
I was on a flight from LA to Chicago and I shit you not, I listened to “Fashion” by David Bowie the whole 4 hours. The moment I got home, I hopped on the piano and wrote “Party Street.” I was thinking about Bowie, but also Prince’s work on The Batman soundtrack. The energy of and in “Party Street” was very much inspired by the rowdiness and pure excitement from the Joker’s art museum scene.
We’re all coming out of a rough year and it’s so great to have some upbeat tracks we can dance to. How did this crazy year influence your song-writing/life as an artist?
I think it made me dig deep into my artistry and go back to my singer/song-writing roots within my pop world. I’ve gone back to writing on the piano, and I’ve been motivated to be more daring with production and song structure. This crazy year, in many ways, has made me excited for the future artistically.
What does the future hold for all things Kit Major?
Well, with all the writing from this year, I have my first EP on the horizon! Very excited for the next coming singles, visuals, and collaborations coming this summer. I currently have been writing the songs I am most proud of so I’m bouncing off the walls for them all to be ready for release!
Finally, if you could only spin one record for the rest of your life, what would it be?
This is an extremely hard question but I feel like it would have to be a battle between ‘The Fame’ and ‘American Idiot.’
