Nothing beats the sound of Lana Del Rey. Following the success of “Love,” Lana Del Rey released her latest single with The Weeknd titled “Lust for Life” taken from her forthcoming album of the same name.
The two previously collaborated with the Weekend’s latest albums, Beauty Behind the Madness (“Prisoner”) and Starboy (“Party Monster” and “Stargirl Interlude”). Unlike these songs, “Lust for Life” grants listeners the opportunity to hear their vocals in harmony. The sultry voice of Lana Del Rey combined with the Weeknd’s head voice perfectly complement one another.
The title of the single alludes to Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life.” While Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life,” with its catchy drum beat, glorifies the drug culture, Lana Del Rey’s “Lust for Life” describes the passion that keeps people moving: “In a lust for life,” as the delicate vocals of Lana Del Rey and the Weeknd sing, “keeps us alive.” Like most of her songs, Lana Del Rey writes about being with the person she loves.
True to her style, Del Rey provides a pop culture reference, alluding to the hit 1960s song “My Boyfriend’s Back” with the lines from her song “My boyfriend’s back / And he’s cooler than ever.” She even includes vocals popularized in doo-wop foreground in the song. The single was accompanied with a video featuring the two singers sitting atop of the Hollywood sign. The Hollywood sign reinforces her respect for the vintage but also romanticizes Hollywood, with the sign generally symbolizing a place where dreams come true. By situating the song and video in Hollywood, Lana Del Rey situates this space for dreamers and lovers.
Currently, there is no release date for Lust for Life, but after “Love” and “Lust for Life,” the album is guaranteed a winner. I hope Lana Del Rey and the Weeknd continue to collaborate because their duet creates a powerful chemistry. If you haven’t already, be sure to listen to Lana Del Rey’s latest single.
