Grammy award winning artist, Lauryn Hill, was sentenced to three months today for tax evasion in a federal court. Over the past decade, Hill has failed to pay over $1 million in taxes.

Hill compared to her experience in the music business to the slavery of her ancestors.

No seriously. She did.

Hill said: “I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them. I had an economic system imposed on me.”

Over the past several days, Hill has paid over $900,000 dollars in taxes. In addition to this, Hill has to pay penalties and interest according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

In addition to serving three months in jail, Hill will also have to pay a $60,000 dollar fine.

Since here arrest about a year ago, Hill has become critical of the state of pop culture today.

"Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual," Hill wrote. "I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival."

On July 8, Hill must report to the prison to serve out her sentence.

Lauryn Hill is known for her work with the Fugees along with her 1998 album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”.
