Liam Payne has revealed his secret struggle with mental health during the height of One Direction's fame.
Speaking to The Sun the singer said, “I shouldn’t have been able to do as many shows as we did, if I’m honest about it, if I’m brutally honest about it." Aside from the depression he felt, Payne also talked about putting an act to show the world, instead of dealing with his issues. “Going out and putting that happy smile on my face and singing the songs, honestly, sometimes it was like putting on one of those costumes, going out there and, underneath the costume, people don’t really see what’s going on.”
He also revealed that things became so bad that the band had to cancel a show in Belfast way back in 2015. It was a period of time wherein Payne was still reeling from his break-up with then-girlfriend Sophia Smith and the singer admitted that he had a hard time dealing with his heartache on top of his mental health struggles. “I let it get to me that day. I wasn’t in a good place. And unfortunately I was going through a rough time and I let it get to me a little bit too much. That was it," he said.
Looking back he thought the band needed to slow down the brakes on their roller-coaster life and hectic schedule. “The more we did, I just don’t think we stopped and celebrated enough how great things were and I think that’s what got on top of us in the end. It was like, ‘Oh, you’ve just won three EMAs, but get on the plane and go to the next place,'” Payne said which is why he thought the hiatus was a great idea. “Even though I know fans are not mad about it...we needed it."
Other members of One Direction have not opened up about any mental health struggle during the height of their boyband career, but from time to time they would talk about their hectic schedule and how it would sometimes take its toll on them.
Mental health issues can strike anyone whether an ordinary person or someone as famous as Liam Payne. It can be a problem for royals too like Prince Harry who has become a mental health advocate. But over the years celebrities like Kristin Bell and Leona Lewis who speak out about their own struggles have somewhat diminished the social stigma and have brought positive attention to this issue.
So it is good that a public figure like Liam Payne is brave enough to reveal his own mental health struggle. But if you're worried about him, fret not, the singer said that he is happier now with his popstar girlfriend Cheryl and their newborn son Bear. “I’m a totally different person now to how I used to be about it,” Payne said.
This goes to show how one can adapt and still live a happy life while dealing with mental health.
