King of Broadway Lin-Manuel Miranda is conquering new heights, as his charity single "Almost Like Praying" debuts at no.1 on the Digital Songs Sale charts!
"Almost Like Praying" is Lin-Manuel Miranda's first Top 40 hit
The song sold an estimated 111,000 downloads for the tracking week ending on October 13. The sales have propelled the track to debut at no.20 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and is the Tony winner's first Top 40 hit.
"I'm filled with gratitude," Lin-Manuel Miranda told Billboard. "The generosity of the American people sends a clear message to our fellow citizens and the 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico: we have not forgotten about you, we will never forget you and we will continue to be here for you."
"Almost Like Praying" features vocals from a group of famous artists of Latin descent, they include among many others, Marc Anthony, Camilla Cabello, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Luis Fonsi and Rita Moreno.
In describing the singers who worked with him on the charity single Miranda said, "What I’m so proud of in this track is everybody on it cares so much for Puerto Rico and they all said yes."
Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspired by "Maria" from West Side Story
The song contains elements of "Maria" a song from the stage musicalWest Side Story, which by coincidence also tells the story of Puerto Ricans living in New York. "I wrote this song the day after the hurricane hit Puerto Rico. And one, we realized this storm was the worst storm to hit the island in modern history, and its name was Maria. And that’s the name of my favorite song from West Side Story. So I thought, how can I flip that negative connotation into something (positive) for Puerto Rico?" Miranda said.
All proceeds of the single will go directly to Hurricane relief operations in the US island territory through the Hispanic Federation’s Unidos Disaster Relief Fund. Listen to "Almost Like Praying" below.
