Having spent a number of years as the band-leader of his 5 and 12-piece bands, performing traditional swing and jazz classics at several venues in LA, and entertained hundreds of music fans as part of a residency at the Disneyland resort, Luke Carlsen has come to be known by many as the “Millennial Crooner.” Aged just 26, but with a baritone voice that has already captivated thousands, he’s already enjoyed a wave of success following the release of debut single “What’ll I Do”, and that success looks set to grow even more as he unveils his choice for a second single.
Said choice, which will no doubt delight fans of a certain Fred Astaire and which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere, is a cover of “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”, written and composed by George and Ira Gershwin and first heard in the 1937 film Shall We Dance. The song has, over the years been covered by a whole host of famous names including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Brian Wilson and Van Morrison, and now it’s Luke’s turn to put his own spin on the classic.
Luke says of his decision to cover the song, taken from upcoming EP My Love, which drops February 12th 2021: “To me, George and Ira Gershwin were the best songwriting partnership of the 20th century. I think “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” is one of their best, and I had not heard a new version from a singer in a long time. A fellow singer/songwriter, Evan DeVries, showed me a YouTube video of a singer named Allen Stone. He covered Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” with a blue-eyed soul feel. It is dope! I thought it would be groovy to try that with “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” and I think it gives it a feel unlike any other version you will hear. It’s fresh but still feels old school.”
