It looks like five-time NBA champion Earvin “Magic” Johnson can add another award to his list – father of the year! Johnson’s son Earvin III – aka EJ – recently hit the sunset strip with his boyfriend, and dad couldn’t be happier! Magic says “I love E.J. so much. That’s my main man. Nothing has changed.”
The former NBA superstar has known that EJ is gay for years, and his support of EJ has never wavered. “I told him, ‘Look, I’m going to love you regardless. Just let me know: Are you or aren’t you?’ Finally, he said, ‘Yes, I am.’” And that was that. Like we said, father of the year! And it’s not just dad who’s a rock star parent to the 20-year-old NYU student – mom has been great too! “Cookie and I love EJ and support him in every way…We’re very proud of him.”
The support goes both ways, though. Magic and his business partner recently took over the LA Dodgers franchise, and since then EJ has been “hoping and praying” for his father’s team. On a related note, Magic recently discussed what he would do if a member of his team came out as gay. In his truly supportive fashion, he said, “If that ever happened, I’m going to support him 150 percent… That’s who I am. I’m a protector.”
Magic Johnson played for the LA Lakers, winning the NBA championship and the NBA Finals MVP Award in his rookie year. He went on to win four more championships with the Lakers before retiring abruptly in 1991 after announcing that he has contracted HIV. He bravely declared that he would devote the rest of his life to fighting the disease, and he has. While he suffered greatly at the hands of the media at the time, Johnson is now seen as a hero. Not only is he one of the greatest ever to play the game, but he has spent a lot of his time and energy educating the public about HIV and AIDS.
