In the same week that has seen her attend Comic Con in San Diego along with many of her Game Of Thrones co-stars and be revealed as a guest star in the new series of Doctor Who, Maisie Williams has spoken out about shutting down those who tell her to be quiet and is encouraging girls to stand up and be themselves.
Speaking to The Telegraph, the 18-year-old actress, famed for playing Arya Stark in the hit HBO show, said:
“I’ve been told by a lot of people that I should keep my mouth shut. But that just fuels me to do the complete opposite. I’ve always been bossy. I’ve always wanted to take control.”
Now an ambassador for the Always #LikeAGirl ad campaign, she explains she is passionate in her desire to encourage women to be themselves and to live their lives the way they want by declaring:
“Every girl should feel like that – that they can take control of their future. I want to inspire people to make those decisions based on what they want to do – not what they think they should do.”
As a young woman who comes in at a little over five feet tall, it’s not entirely surprising that Williams is considered petite and cute a lot of the time. However, the cute label in particular is not one she ‘s fond of. She recalls:
“I remember being told I was cute and feeling it was really patronising – what if I wanted to get muddy and play with the boys? I felt like I was boxed in by this one word.”
As her character Arya continues to come up against numerous challenges in her life, Williams is a prime example of what it means to be a woman on a mission, and one who won’t let anyone stand in her way.
